Today, I'd like to take you on a tour of a district that exudes an air of the nostalgic, but also the modern. It's the Fukagawa area on the borders of the Kiyosumi Shirakawa and Sumida rivers. This area once thrived on river transport, and many of its warehouses have been transformed into meeting places. Tea rooms, museums and art galleries attract the crowds.

Miyako
This traditional and popular restaurant is located in the heart of the Fukagawa district, which includes Kiyosumi Sihrakawa, Morishita, Saga and Monzen Nakatcho. The classic wood and stone front welcomes me with nostalgia, and as I'm led into a tatami-floored room, my enthusiasm never leaves me. Since it opened in 1924, it has long been frequented by the many fishermen who populated the area. Its success has continued to this day, thanks in particular to the famous Wappa Meshi. Without resting my chopsticks, I savour the rice steamed with shellfish, in a box made from strips of Japanese cypress. What finesse!
Here, time stands still and tradition is experienced through all five senses.

Blue bottle Coffee
After lunch, it's time for a coffee. I decide to go to the iconic café nearby, the Blue bottle Coffe.
When it opened, its popularity was immediate, and it brought with it a host of tea rooms and other eateries. The former goods depot now attracts young people with a taste for the trendy.
I order a select espresso and a Japanese-style egg cream, just sweetened, which is the perfect accompaniment to the bitter after-dinner drink.

Tokyo Museum of Modern Art
For a digestive stroll, I head for the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, not far from Kiba Park. Every day, you can stroll through the museum and admire the permanent collection or a temporary exhibition. That day, David Hockney was in the spotlight. The shop is packed with art-related finds. You can buy books, of course, but also other objects. I was tempted by a bag designed by Andy Warhol. You can also relax in the tearoom or do some research in the library.

Café Fukadaso
After the museum, it's time to take a break. At the café again. I set my sights on the "Fukadaso café". Built sixty years ago, it used to be a hangar with flats upstairs. Time takes its course here too. I enjoy a scone straight from the oven with ... a coffee.
In Kiyosumi Sihrakawa, you can also visit the traditional Kiyosumi Teien garden or the Fukagawa Edo Museum, which recreates life in the Edo period. It's a retro-modern district that's well worth a visit. It's up to you to find your favourite spot!

清澄白河
下町風情溢れる町並みと隅田川と小名木川の水辺の景色が広がる清澄白河。水運の拠点とし て昔からたくさんの倉庫がありました。 そんな地域の特性を活かした倉庫をリノベーションしたおしゃれカフェや、アートの街と呼 ばれるほどの美術館やギャラリーの数々、下町ならではの老舗グルメまで、魅力たっぷりの 町の代表的な人気スポットを楽しんだ私の1日をご紹介します。
深川めし『割烹 みや古』
清澄白川、森下、佐賀、門前仲町などは深川と呼ばれた地域で漁師町でした。その深川でと れたあさりを使った郷土料理として長年愛されているのが”深川めし”です。その深川めしの 人気を作ってきた1924年創業の老舗に訪れました。 風情ある店構えを前にしたら日本人の私も胸が高鳴り、伝統的なお座敷に通されて料理を待 つ間も特別な時間が流れているよう。 しばらくしたら、ほかほかのわっぱ飯が運ばれてきました。蓋をあけると湯気が立ちのぼ り、あまりに良い香りですぐさま熱々を一口。ふっくらとしたあさりがたっぷり入った炊き 込みご飯は、上品な出汁の味とあさりの歯応えが絶品で箸が止まりません。これぞ江戸の 味!
伝統を五感で満喫したランチでした。
『ブルーボトルコーヒー』 清澄白河フラッグシップカフェ
ランチの後はコーヒーを飲みたくなりますね。そこでカフェの町清澄白河のランドマーク的 存在「ブルーボトルコーヒー」へ。 サードウェーブコーヒーの火付け役でもある「ブルーボトルコーヒー」が日本初出店の地に 選んだのがこの清澄白河。倉庫をリノベーションしたコーヒーショップは瞬く間に人気にな り、近隣に次々とおしゃれなカフェが出店。風情ある下町が一気にホットな町として注目を 集めました。 こだわりのコーヒーと、清澄白河店限定のプリンも注文。コクのあるしっかりとした甘みの プリンとコーヒーの相性は言わずもがな抜群です。
東京都現代美術館
食後の腹ごなしに木場公園にある東京都現代美術館(MOT)まで散歩をしました。 コレクション展や企画展など、注目を集めるモダンアートの展示が常に開催されている人気 美術館です。 この日は現代美術を代表するイギリスの画家「デイヴィッド・ホックニー展」を鑑賞しまし た。 展示室以外にも美術館全体にアート作品が点在しており、美術館内を散策するだけでも楽し いのがMOTの特徴。さらにミュージアムショップには書籍以外にも多様なクリエイターに よるユニークなプロダクトが充実していて、私もアンディ・ウォーホルがデザインされた個 性的なバックを購入しました。 他にも図書室や人気のレストランなども入っていて、様々な楽しみ方ができる美術館です。
fukadaso cafe
美術館を歩き回って満喫した後はカフェへ。カフェやギャラリーを梯子するのも清澄白河の 王道の楽しみ方です。 今回選んだのは築60年のアパート兼倉庫だった「深田荘」をリノベーションしたfukadaso cafeへ。 居心地の良いレトロ可愛い店内でコーヒーと焼きたてのスコーンを頂きましたが、他のテー ブルは昼ビールを楽しんでいる人もいたりと、ゆったりとした時間が流れていました。
清澄白河には、美しい日本庭園の「清澄庭園」や江戸の町を再現した「深川江戸資料館」などまだまだ見どころがたくさん。歩いて回れる範囲に新旧たくさんの見どころが詰まった下町で、ぜひ自分のお気に入りの場所を見つけてみてください。
